Perperikon Shot as Often as the Champion's League

Date: 14-09-2006

TV channels from all over the world vie in shooting Perperikon as if this is the place where the Champion's League plays. Following the example of National Geographic and Discovery, several British and German TV channels arrived to film the ancient Thracian sanctuary, archaeologist Nikolay Ovcharov commented.

This summer's finds are not sensational, but prove the life's continuity in Perperikon, the Professor summed up the archaeological season.

The discovery and research of a cultural layer dating back to the 1-5th century AD, which proves that the biggest sanctuary on the Balkans was functioning during the Roman Age, is considered the experts' biggest achievement this year.

The earliest traces of human existence in the area have been dated back to the late Neolithic age, i.e. end of 6th-early 5th millennium B.C. The pits with powdered cult ceramics have been hewn directly in the rock in the Stone-Copper Age, but the rock complex has evolved throughout the Bronze Age, too, becoming a sacred city during the Roman Age, i.e. in the 2 - 4 Century A.D.

Several different cultures and religious cults have left their trace in Perperikon, but all worshipped invariably the same cult, that of the summer solstice. The Proto-Bulgarians believed it was the day of the god Tangra, whereas the Slavic tribes worshipped the sacred herbs and the magical healing. The Christians marked the day of John the Baptist’s birth, June 24, better known by its popular name of Enyovden.
