For the first time the name of Teteven was mentioned in a Turkish document from the 15th century.
The traces of life in the Teteven region date since Pre-history times (15,000 - 5,000 BC). Remains of primitive human life have been found in some 30 caves on the municipality territory. Pottery, stone tools, bronze finery from Thracian burial mounds are evidence that the Thracians had settlements on these lands. Currently, there are 113 unexplored Thracian tombs in the municipality of Teteven. Roads on the ridge of the surrounding mountains, relics from castles and watch-towers, coins by the emperors Trajan (98 -117 A.D.), Antonius Pius(138 -161 A.D.) and Commodus (180 - 192 A.D.), are only a part of the traces left here by the Romans.
In the Middle Ages 27 handcrafts were developed in the town and goods from small workshops and factories were exported by caravans to near and distant markets.
Currently, there are over 70 historical and architectural monuments from the past - monasteries, churches, houses and schools in the municipality of Teteven.
With over 20,000 ha of forests the municipality owns 2 natural reserves - Boatin (over 200-year-old beech woods) and Tsaritchina (the largest white fir habitat on the Balkan peninsula). The area is rich in wildlife. 78 species of birds nestle in their 'kingdom' near Ribaritsa village.
